It couldn’t get worse?

This weeks writing prompts from Mama Kat’s were interesting and a few gave me ideas but my choice for this was “it couldn’t get any worse”. Before I start on my story let me just say that before this happened I would ask myself that question; afterwords you could not pay enough to even think it!

Somewhere in the mid 80’s I stumbled into line of work that frankly today I think you have to be NUTS to get into voluntarily – property management. What started off as a part-time job I was doing as a favor for the man I was living with quickly and abruptly became full time. The way events unfolded I should have know these people could not be trusted. But I was young and not too savvy. I became the resident manager for two apartment complexes. For those not familiar with this industry a resident manager MUST live on site and a property manager does not (in most cases). Since we already lived there it was no big deal except the fact in order to keep the job I had to sign a new lease stating that if I quit or was let go I had 30 days to vacate the premises.  I know, I know, your thinking why on earth? but at the time I needed the job. Hind sight tells me that they knew that fact and capitalized on their knowledge.

FYI – it is not a good idea for family to work together as a general rule. With this job I became the boss of my boyfriend. That went well for about a week which is the first time I said no to something he wanted at work. It went downhill from there. I had anticipated that and figured this was the worst that could happen; I was wrong. He was very macho and very Italian so he did not take that well and I started to see a side to him I never knew existed. But work was work and home was separate and I could deal with that part, again I was wrong. He didn’t share my philosophy of work stays at work and home life got hard uncomfortable difficult. One of us will surely find other work I thought, nope, didn’t happen. Okay, so things couldn’t get worse, wright? wrong again.

As I was forced to do evictions on not only the bad people doing illegal things I also had to fire a house keeper which meant she had to move. Of course she made it hard by making me go through the courts and putting her out. I thought that situation could not get worse and was wrong again. She was there the day the Deputy’s showed up with her three children! I knew those kids so well and felt just sick about them having to go through this and angry that their mother would do this to them! But out they went. And all this happened on December 7th! Tell me my luck isn’t bad. But those 7 evictions were the last of the lot and things were looking up for the property and its residents. Things were bound to get better. Guess again.

For the end of the year we did inventory and found a lot of things missing. After weeks of investigations and a few stake outs; yes that’s right I put my security experience to work; I found the thief. Right about now you are thinking great! Well, put that back in the drawer because the thief was the man I lived with! Not wanting to make things worse I convinced my employers and owners of the property to give him a chance to just replace the items and nothing more would be said or done. There, crises averted – nope, he denied doing it even though one of the pieces of equipment was found in our home hidden away in a place he thought I would never go. A second and third chance was given with the same results. I was told to have him arrested for grand larceny! Surely it could not get worse than having the man you share your life with taken away in handcuffs right before your eyes. Nope, try again – having to explain to his 11 year old son why. Not quite the end yet.

Three days later the threatening phone calls started, cherry bombs set off at the bedroom window and broken windows at home. Did I mention the dead birds at the front door or flaming bags of poop? Needles to say I started spinning into a bit of a depression, had trouble eating, sleeping and the like but for sure it could not get worse. O-contrare my friends, three weeks after having him locked up I was let go by the company and had to move myself! And that my friends is why I never say “It can’t get any worse”.

Andy Rooney

Andy Rooney was truely an American Treasure the likes which we may not see again in our lifetime and will be missed. When he retired from 60 Minutes last month I was saddened, but also hopeful to see him pop up elsewhere from time to time. After all, he was a writer and a journalist – it was in his blood. You could always count on him to write what he ment and mean what he wrote. I looked forward to reading or listening to what he had to say. As our country and world changed over the years becoming overly sensative and way too politicly correct we could count on Mr. Rooney to say or write the things that most of us were thinking or feeling but were too scared to say. He had a unique qualification to write the things he did in the manner he did because he had seen more than a lot of us will ever see. I believe he understood more about the human condition because of his life’s experiences and we are all richer for it.

Thank you Mr. Rooney for your insight, opinions, humor and stories that you shared with us for so many years. Rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends for their loss.

Ah, the handbag/purse! Unlike some women, I do not like carrying one. There are several reasons for this. Crooks like to snatch them, you have to find a place to put them when not carrying them, they slow you down when getting in and out of a vehicle, people bump into them while you are walking and of course my favorite – they can become a junk collector. However they can and do serve a purpose on occasion so I have several; after all, you need certain bags for certain things.

At one point in my life I carried LARGE bags. My daughter use to call them my Mary Poppins bag. The reason for this is simple, what ever someone needed I seemed to have it in there. For example; writing supplies, first aid items, tools, sewing kit and so forth. Now a days I still have these items close at hand but sometimes it is a small purse with a scaled down version (everything else is generally in the car). My daughter seemed to be quite pleased to see the “Poppins” bags vanish and see her mother move into the 21st century. Of course now that she is a Mom with a toddler and one on the way I think she understands better about the time her own mom carried all that stuff.

So, if you were to judge me on the contents of my handbag/purse you say that I am a person that likes to be prepared for just about anything that comes my way. And is that such a bad thing? On the occasions that I do not have one (just a wallet in one hip pocket and a rabbit skinnin’ knife in the other) you would say that I’m a person that knows what I’m after and doesn’t waist time fooling around. Also not such a bad thing I think. And for those of you who might be wondering – yes, the knife comes with me every where 🙂 it folds up, is small, stows away easily and many uses.

Been a while

Sorry for the lapse, but we had to cut expenses last year and one of the first things to go was the internet. I am now WiFi (intermittently) and will try to post some more. So please keep checking back and feel free to subscribe 🙂

Mother Earth

There are people that say all this “global warming” stuff is just some sort of scare tactic devised by whom ever to get money out of us and it is all made up. Some want to convince us that the end of days is near according to some religions. Some just do not care to pay attention to anything outside their own little world.

There are those that believe that Mother Earth has finally had enough of the reckless, uncaring, selfish, and destructive humans that she has allowed to inhabit this planet. She is tired of losing forever some of her natural elements, plant, and animal life. She has tried sending us hints and even had human emissaries to plead her case and educate us. Nevertheless, the human race, for the most part has ignored all of this.

It is way past time for us to pay attention to this planet we live on. We build Damns to hold waters back so that we can build homes and we have the audacity to act surprised and shocked when they break and the homes are destroyed and lives lost. We overpopulate area with poor drainage and are surprised when the heavy rains come that the city streets are flooded. We develop homes and businesses too close to our shores and waterways and cannot believe it when the waters destroy buildings or mudslides take away buildings and roads. We build communities on major fault lines and are surprise when the earth shakes, shifts or opens up and destroys anything we put there. We cannot understand why wild animals come into the towns and neighborhoods that we build in what use to be their homes.

Wake up people, the human race can fight Mother Earth all it wants. However, in case you have not noticed, she wins every time. People talk about countries considered super powers with great military etcetera. The greatest super power of all is Mother Earth. There is no weapon that to use to win a war with her and she cannot be bought off with money.

Bad Idea

Okay, today I did a dumb thing. The weather has been extra hot and humid so the weeds and my rose bushes had run wild and the front of my house was looking awful! So I finally bit the bullet and decided that I’d go out and chop the forest of weed down and tame the roses early in the morning before it got too hot.

What on earth was I thinking?!!!! I was only out there for about 20 minutes and started having trouble breathing and was drenched in sweat. Then I had to drink 16 ounces of ice water to cool down a bit. My breathing is still a bit labored and I can not seem to get cool (which means I can’t sleep). But at lease the roses are not attaching my neighbors and the jungle is down to a marsh. The evergreen bush and others are a different story. Since the temperature is supposed to be over 100 the next few days, I don’t think I will attempt this crazy notion again just yet. Maybe 😀

Stay cool and be careful out there folks. Remember to hydrate and stay indoors if at all possible, especially the children and pets.

Quest Piping

Anyone out there who owns or rents a home/townhouse built somewhere between 1982 and 1993 should make sure they do not have “Quest Piping” . This piping has major leak issues, my community has experienced them since before I purchased my townhouse in 2002. Before you purchase an older home make sure that it does not have this piping. Over the past 8 years I have had a major leak issue almost every year because of this piping either splitting, breaking or bursting. I live in a block of 8 townhouses and it seems that when one of us has a leak the water travels along the foundation inside the cinderblock walls that separate us. In the past 4 days 2 of my 7 neighbors have had major leaks and each time I have suffered water damage.

My parents had a high-end mobile home with this piping and after the 1st big break they had all the piping replaced. This of course was not only expensive but intrusive as ALL the walls had to be removed in order to replace it. unfortunately my funds have not allowed me such a luxury and even if I had done so, my neighbors would have to do so as well. The biggest problems come when the coupling where the main water comes into the house fails. When mine failed I had a waterfall coming out my front door and a good 3 to 4 inches of standing water over my entire downstairs.

So do yourself a favor and really check your home or potential home for any plumbing issues like this. It is also very wise to get a trusted and reputable home inspector before buying a home. Remember that not ALL home inspectors are reputable, so check them out through BBB, Angie’s List or Consumer Affairs. It is your money and you have the right to protect it so be careful and ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS! Dont be a victim of somebody elses greed or trickery.
